Jaguar Type 01; 1,030 HP Electric Grand Tourer With 400-Mile Range

Jaguar has taken a major step toward its electric future with the unveiling of the Jaguar Type 01, an all-electric four-door grand tourer designed to redefine the British luxury carmaker’s identity. Revealed in New York, the new electric Jaguar comes with a starting price of £130,000, or approximately $172,900, placing it firmly in the premium luxury EV segment.

The Type 01 is much more than another electric vehicle launch for Jaguar. It represents the company’s wider transformation into an all-electric luxury automotive brand. By choosing New York for the global unveiling, Jaguar is also sending a clear message about its ambitions in the North American market, particularly among wealthy customers looking for high-performance electric cars.

A Bold New Design

The Jaguar Type 01 design combines traditional Jaguar proportions with a modern electric-car identity. The vehicle features a long bonnet, low roofline, wide stance and a dramatic overall silhouette. Large 23-inch wheels further enhance its sporty and premium appearance.

Aerodynamic efficiency has also been a major focus. The Type 01 has a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic Jaguar produced so far. Active aerodynamic vanes and a three-stage deployable rear spoiler help control airflow around the vehicle while improving stability and efficiency at higher speeds.

Three Electric Motors Deliver 1,030 HP

Performance is one of the strongest highlights of the new Jaguar EV. The Type 01 uses a three-motor electric powertrain capable of producing up to 1,030 horsepower and 1,365 Nm of torque.

Despite its large luxury-car proportions, the Type 01 is capable of sports-car-level acceleration. Jaguar claims the electric grand tourer can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.

This combination of luxury, long-distance comfort and extreme performance puts the Type 01 in a highly competitive part of the premium electric vehicle market.

118 kWh Battery and Around 400 Miles of Range

Powering the Type 01 is a large 118 kWh battery pack. Jaguar says the vehicle can deliver approximately 400 miles of EPA-rated range, making it suitable for both daily driving and long-distance journeys.

Range remains one of the most important factors for customers considering an expensive electric vehicle. Jaguar has therefore focused not only on performance but also on creating an EV capable of covering substantial distances between charging stops.

Fast charging is another major feature. With a 350 kW rapid charger, the Type 01 can reportedly recover around 200 miles of driving range in approximately 13 minutes.

Built in Britain

The Jaguar Type 01 will be manufactured at the company’s Solihull plant in the United Kingdom. Several key components will also be supplied through Jaguar Land Rover’s British manufacturing network.

Electric drive units and battery-related components will be sourced from Wolverhampton, while body panels will come from the company’s Halewood facility in Merseyside.

The transition to electric vehicle manufacturing has also required significant workforce training. Nearly 9,000 Solihull employees have reportedly undergone retraining to prepare for the production of next-generation electric vehicles.

Billions Invested in Electrification

The Type 01 is part of a much larger investment strategy by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). The company announced an investment programme of between £15 billion and £18 billion in 2024, with a substantial portion directed toward electrification and UK manufacturing facilities.

Around £11.5 billion has been allocated so far, highlighting the scale of JLR's commitment to electric vehicle technology and the transformation of its manufacturing operations.

Why America Matters to Jaguar

The decision to reveal the Type 01 in New York is strategically important. Jaguar sees the United States as a key opportunity for expanding its presence in the luxury vehicle market.

Although EV adoption in the US has developed differently from Europe, the market continues to offer significant opportunities in the premium segment. Jaguar is therefore targeting customers who are less sensitive to the high purchase price and more interested in performance, technology, exclusivity and luxury.

With a starting price equivalent to more than $170,000, the Type 01 is clearly not intended to compete with mass-market electric cars. Instead, Jaguar is positioning it as an exclusive high-performance luxury EV for affluent buyers.

Jaguar Takes a Different Risk

The launch comes at a time when the luxury automotive industry remains divided over the pace of electrification. Several premium manufacturers have expressed caution about how quickly wealthy customers will move from powerful petrol engines to fully electric powertrains.

Jaguar, however, has chosen a more aggressive approach. Rather than treating electric vehicles as a small part of its future portfolio, the company is attempting to move toward an all-electric Jaguar lineup.

That makes the Type 01 particularly important. Its success or failure could influence how Jaguar's wider electrification strategy develops in the coming years.

A Critical Model for Jaguar's Future

Jaguar is entering this new phase while dealing with several business challenges. The company recently announced plans for workforce reductions of nearly 10 percent through voluntary redundancies. It has also been dealing with the impact of a cyberattack that disrupted production.

Against this background, the Type 01 carries considerable expectations. Jaguar needs the new EV to attract customers, strengthen its premium positioning and demonstrate that its new electric strategy can work in the real-world luxury market.

Production Expected to Begin in 2027

Orders for the Jaguar Type 01 are expected to open in early 2027, with production scheduled to begin in the UK during the same year. Customer deliveries are expected to start in the second half of 2027.

With 1,030 horsepower, 1,365 Nm of torque, a 118 kWh battery, around 400 miles of range and 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.2 seconds, the Type 01 certainly has impressive numbers on paper.

The bigger question is whether wealthy customers will embrace Jaguar's vision of an electric luxury grand tourer.

If the Type 01 succeeds, it could become far more than Jaguar's first major electric flagship. It could mark the point at which one of Britain's most recognisable luxury car brands finally makes its transition from the traditional combustion-engine era to an all-electric future.
